The Windsor-Essex County Health unit and its counterparts across the country are raising concerns about a new nicotine product sold to people of all ages, including children.

Nicotine pouches from the brand name Zonnic are being sold in flavours and packaging that are attractive to young people, the local health unit said. The pouches, which are placed in the mouth between the cheek and gum, are now widely available in convenience stores and gas stations and are sold alongside things like candy and chips.

Despite Health Canada’s recommendation against the use of nicotine pouches by those under 18, the product can be purchased without age verification.

The health unit urges parents to have “ongoing and open” conversations with their children about the dangers of nicotine use.

“These products serve as a stepping stone to more dangerous substances due to their addictive nicotine content,” said  Dr. Mehdi Aloosh, local medical officer of health.

I am very concerned about these products

“This is a trend that we are currently experiencing with youth who vape being three times more likely to start smoking tobacco cigarettes.

“I am very concerned about these products leading to early nicotine addiction for our children.”

The health unit said it has made local school boards aware of the pouches and will work with the boards to prevent the use of nicotine products in schools.

Given the recent emergence of the pouches in Canada, they do not fall within the scope of the Smoke-Free Ontario Act, which regulates smoking and vaping in public places, the health unit said.

Although the products are being marketed as a tool to quit smoking, the health unit said there is “no evidence that proves that they are effective in this regard.”
