A soccer coach in the US has been accused of drugging and sexually assaulting children while recording the attacks in a series of alleged crimes uncovered when he accidentally left his phone on the table of a restaurant.
Camilo Hurtado Campos, 63, is alleged to have captured footage of himself raping unconscious boys aged between 9 and 17 over a span of two decades, according to local reports.
The Franklin Police Department in the state of Tennessee was notified by a restaurant after disturbing videos were discovered on a phone that had been left behind.
Lieutenant Charlie Warner said the staff’s intention was to find information about the phone’s owner, but instead, workers stumbled upon numerous appalling videos and pictures.
Upon inspecting Campos’ phone, detectives were confronted with hundreds of incriminating videos and pictures.
Many of the victims were found to be in an unconscious state, potentially unaware of the heinous acts they had endured.
Authorities became aware of the explicit content on June 22 and promptly arrested Campos on June 23 after spotting his vehicle in a carpark.
The investigation has only identified two of the alleged victims thus far. Authorities are actively working to identify all the victims and are seeking the assistance of individuals who may have knowledge of Campos and his victims.
Over the past two decades, Campos has resided in two different neighbourhoods in Franklin.
Detectives say that Campos specifically targeted nearby school playgrounds to recruit children for his soccer team.
He would allegedly groom these children and later invite them to his residence, where he would drug and sexually assault them.
Campos is currently in custody, facing charges of child rape and sexual exploitation of a minor, with the expectation of additional charges to follow.
