Two months following the launch of the ‘Meri Maati Mera Desh’ campaign, state Chief Minister Eknath Shinde concluded the ‘Amrit Kalash Yatra’ at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan on Friday.
In the final leg of the ceremony — which saw the participation of 881 volunteers, bringing kalash containing soil from across Maharashtra — the ‘amrit kalash’ will be transported to New Delhi in a special train, to be part of a national ceremony scheduled on Tuesday (October 31).
The nationwide ‘Meri Mati Mera Desh’ programme — in tribute to martyrs of the country — marks the conclusion of the two-year-long celebration ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ in view of the completion of 75 years of Independence.
During the course of the ceremony — which kicked off with several ministers and senior civic officials paying tributes to the martyrs — CM Shinde said that the ‘Meri Mati Mera Desh’ programme will “enthuse the new generation with a sense of patriotism”.

“Today is also a historic day. This is not only a cultural campaign, but also a campaign to increase the sense of patriotism among the citizens. We got the opportunity to honour the national heroes as part of the campaign. Today, 351 rural and 34 urban kalash are being sent from our state (Maharashtra) to New Delhi,” Shinde said, while explaining the historical importance of the venue — Mahatma Gandhi giving a clarion call of “Do or Die” and launching the “Quit India Movement” from the August Kranti Maidan.
On October 31, soil collected from all states of the country — as a part of the ‘Amrit Kalash Yatra’ — will be used for the installation of an “amrit vatika” and a memorial for ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ near the India Gate in New Delhi.
The ‘Meri Mati Mera Desh’ campaign also saw the participation of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), who erected a plaque commemorating the martyrs at August Kranti Maidan, and set up ‘amrit vatikas’ at four different locations in the city, among others.
