South African National Parks (SANParks) has revealed its plans to collaborate with volunteers to improve the safety of mountain and hiking trails, particularly during the upcoming festive season.
While the strategy details are still being finalized, SANParks spokesperson Babalwa Dlangamandla stated that it’s too early to confirm if private security firms will be part of the initiative. Some of these companies have reportedly been using drones for trail surveillance, although their authorization to operate drones in these areas remains unclear.
According to IOL, a private security firm, operating near Signal Hill and Lion’s Head, recently admitted to deploying drones for surveillance due to a rise in robberies and assaults in the area. However, the firm is not officially permitted to use drones in these locations. Recent incidents, such as the robbery of two cyclists and the disappearance of German tourist Nick Frischke, have fueled concerns about safety on the trails.
Table Mountain authorities are boosting ranger patrols, including teams from the specialized Sea, Air, and Mountain (SEAM) unit to address these concerns. They are also working closely with law enforcement and local safety groups. Additionally, Cape Town’s festive season safety plan includes the use of drones and other technologies to secure popular tourist spots. However, some groups, like the Hikers Network, have raised objections due to privacy and safety concerns.
