Rs 250 crore allocated to encourage STEM-related enrolment

With a provision of Rs 250 crore, the state government on Friday announced the ‘Namo Saraswati Yojana’ scholarship for the year 2024-25 to incentivise increased enrolment in subjects related to STEM (Science, Engineering, Technology, and Mathematics).

“The 21st century is an age of science and technology in which IT and associated technologies touch all aspects of life. New opportunities are also opening up in high-value jobs in technology-related sectors, for which, Science education (STEM) is critical. To incentivise increased enrolment in STEM subjects, I propose the Namo Saraswati scheme. Under this scholarship scheme, students enrolling in the science stream in higher secondary schools (from low and middle-income households) will be assisted with Rs 10,000 annually while studying in class 11 and Rs 15,000 while studying in class 12. This assistance of Rs 25,000 over two years to students is expected to increase the number of students enrolled in science subjects from 2 lakh to 5 lakh annually over the next five years,” Finance Minister Kanu Desai stated in his Budget speech.

Under the scheme, a student who clears the Class 10 board examination with more than 50 per cent marks will get a total scholarship of Rs 25,000 to take the science stream in Class 11-12 in affiliated schools of Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB).

Students who have passed class 10 and taken Science stream in class 11-12 from government and aided schools will be eligible for scholarships irrespective of family income limit. However, students of private schools will be eligible for the scholarship, based on a family income limit of Rs 6 lakh.

“Students availing scholarships under Namo Lakshmi, Gyan Setu, and Gyan Sadhana Yojana will be eligible to get the benefit of Vigyan Sadhana Scholarship Yojana as an additional benefit,” an education official stated.

    Festive offer

Along with this, all three merit scholarship schemes will be integrated under the Namo Saraswati Merit Scholarship Scheme.

These are the Chief Minister Gyan Setu Merit Scholarship Scheme for Class 6 to 12 students (2 lakh students), the Chief Minister Gyan Sadhana Merit Scholarship Scheme for Class 9 to 12 students (1 lakh students), and CM Vigyan Sadhana Merit Scheme for Class 11-12 Science stream students (around 2 to 5 lakh students).
