Who decided that tips restaurant servers, bartenders, cabbies or those working in the service world has to be 15 per cent? Or more.
With higher minimum wages (up 6.8 per cent in Ontario last Oct. 1; up another eight per cent this Oct. 1, to $16.55 per hour), and restaurants having raised their prices for food orders, that 15 per cent is much higher.

The Ontario government included restaurant servers in raising minimum wages, so there is no longer low wages for restaurant servers. So, why are we still required to fork over 15 per cent? That’s a lot of money.

What happens in a restaurant? The greeter seats you, a server asks if you want something to drink. If you ask for alcohol they will keep coming back asking if you want another drink and the price goes up.
Someone else from the kitchen brings your meal. There are a number of persons making sure you are fed. Therefore, the server does not take care of the paying customer from start to finish. It’s a team effort, but the server often gets the 15-per cent tip?
I can see 10 per cent, but not 15 per cent because we are now paying so much more for our meals. Everything has now been raised in price. And the consumer is paying that price.
