QUEBEC — The Coalition Avenir Québec government says it wants to make private rooms free in all hospitals in the province.

Health Minister Christian Dubé said Tuesday he wants to remove “inequities” that were recently denounced by the Quebec ombudsman.

In its latest report, the ombudsman — known as the Protecteur du citoyen — criticized the fact that private hospital rooms are free in institutions where only that type of housing is available but patients are charged where semi-private and multiple-bed rooms are available.

“The principle of no longer paying for private rooms, I think it’s something we should put in place,” Dubé told reporters.

“I don’t think the idea is to make money on the rental of rooms, but rather to give citizens a comfortable room.”

Dubé said it’s one of several projects on his list of priorities.

He said he was uncertain how much revenue the government collects from billing for private hospital rooms.
