The budget of Quebec Finance Minister Eric Girard, scheduled to be tabled Tuesday afternoon in Quebec City, will be an opportunity to see if education truly is a priority of the Legault government, according to the province’s teachers labour federations.

The Fédération autonome de l’enseignement (FAE) thinks education spending should be increased by a minimum of 7 per cent.

FAE president Mélanie Hubert said she expects salary increases and gains negotiated in the last contract negotiation to be properly financed and that the government won’t rob Peter to pay Paul.

A brief submitted by Quebec’s major labour federations cited the necessity of significantly increasing the financing of public services, including education. They also called for enhanced training programs and support for those who are in the process of re-training or re-qualifying for a position.

The Fédération des syndicats de l’enseignement (FSE), meanwhile, acknowledges that the newly negotiated contracts represent “a considerable increase” in government funding and that much work has been done to improve the quality of air in schools. However, the needs of education transcend the issues of funding and a dialogue must be maintained with the province, said FSE president Josée Scalabrini.
