‘Mind-bendingly brilliant’: Djoker makes history with demolition job

Novak Djokovic continues to prove he’s an unstoppable force on a tennis court.

The Serbian superstar appears to only be getting better despite being 36 and having 24 Grand Slam titles under his belt.

On Sunday the world number one went head-to-head with world number two Carlos Alcaraz in the second semi-final of the ATP Finals in Turin.

The hotly contested showdown had tennis fans salivating at the thought of the two stars throwing everything they had at one another in a three-set war.

What unfolded however was the complete opposite.

Djokovic turned his rival into mince meat and made him look second rate as he wiped him off the court in less than 90 minutes as he claimed the 6-3, 6-2 victory.

The win sees him make even more history as he becomes the first man to reach the final at all four Grand Slams and the ATP Finals in the same year since 2015.

The last man to achieve the absurd feat? Novak Djokovic. He now joins Roger Federer as having achieved the feat twice after the Swiss maestro did it in 2006 and 2007.

Fans watching on were left in disbelief over the display put forth by Djokovic and believe, despite everything he’s achieved, he is showing no signs of slowing down.

Tennis commentator David Law wrote: “It is no exaggeration to say that Novak Djokovic, aged 36, with 24 major titles already under his belt, is getting better at playing tennis.”

The Tennis Podcast wrote: “As a contest, not a classic, but that’s because, from 3-3 first set Djokovic was mind-bendingly brilliant. If it’s possible, he was even better than his usual best. Supreme.”

Djokovic will now turn his attention to the final where he’ll aim to achieve another record-breaking feat as he guns for a seventh ATP Finals title.

Standing in his way is fourth seeded Italian Jannik Sinner.

Sinner took care of business against Djokovic in the group stage when he claimed a tough fought three-set win.

He booked his spot in the final after taking down Russian star Daniil Medvedev in the opening semi-final with a convincing 6-3, 6-7, 6-1 victory.

“It’s like the first time you cook pasta with tomato sauce, maybe it’s not that good. You realise that it needs more salt so the next time you add it. Then you might start using fresh tomatoes, and then add in basil,” Sinner told reporters.

“You learn things as you go along, until you get the dish right. That’s what I’m doing. But you have to be careful, you can’t just keep adding new things, because if you put in too many ingredients the dish won’t be good any more. There’s always a balance to be struck.”

Medvedev predicted big things for Sinner after Saturday’s defeat, saying that the Italian will win Grand Slams and top the world rankings if he keeps playing as he has in Turin.

“Right now he’s, let’s call it, riding a wave. You can see it,” said Medvedev.

“If he plays like this, like he played in the last weeks, all the time, he’s going to have slams, number one … The question is how often is he going to ride it. When he’s not on the wave, how good he plays.”

The final between Djokovic and Sinner will commence at 4am (AEDT) on Monday morning.
