‘Chapito’ is the son of imprisoned trafficker Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, who led the Sinaloa Cartel until his extradition to the US in 2017
On May 20, 2020, two Irish Sinaloan gang members met in the Roca del Valles industrial estate in Barcelona, according to police intelligence files.
An Irish truck driver handed over €590,000 to the Encrochat user known as ‘breakborder’ in, what appears to be, one large parcel.
These men are trusted to transport cash back to O’Shea Salazar in payment for the cocaine shipments.
Once the money is in the hands of a second driver, he sends three images — two of boxed up €50 slabs and one of a cash counting machine — to O’Shea Salazar.
The former Killorglin FÁS applicant immediately sends the images to his uncle Ricardo Salazar, who at this time is based in Chile. “I already have Chapito’s money,” he wrote. This text provided Spanish investigators with confirmation, which could be used as evidence in a court case, that Iván Archivaldo Guzmán Salazar was at the apex of what they were uncovering.
Chapito — which translates as ‘Little Shorty’ — is a Mexican drug lord and the son of imprisoned trafficker Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, who led the Sinaloa cartel until his extradition to the United States in 2017.
The Sinaloa cartel, also known as the Guzmán-Zambada Organisation or Blood Alliance, is an international crime syndicate based in the city of Culiacán, Sinaloa.
The US Intelligence Community considers the Sinaloa cartel to be the largest and most powerful drug trafficking organisation in the world.
According to the National Drug Intelligence Centre, the Sinaloa cartel is primarily involved in the distribution of cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, fentanyl, cannabis and MDMA.
After the arrest of El Chapo and another son, Ovidio Guzmán López in 2016 and 2019, the cartel is now headed by old-school leader Ismael Zambada García (aka El Mayo) and Guzmán’s other sons, Jesús Alfredo Guzmán and Ivan Archivaldo Guzmán Salazar as well as half-brothers Ovidio Guzmán López and Joaquín Guzmán López. They are commonly referred to as the “Chapitos.”
Morris O’Shea’s uncle Ricardo Salazar, described in the 2020 files as “currently in Chile with the purpose of organising the acquisition, storage and shipment of cocaine” is understood to be a close relative of the Chapito’s mother.

They further state his “very close relationship with Chapo Guzmán’s son.”
One contact, who “works as a freight forwarder in the port of Barcelona” is of special interest to police as they provide a key service to the Irish Sinaloa crew.
“Simon is there with you,” Ricardo tells his nephew. “Do the logistics and give the price where they want it and so on,” he says. “Who is going to import it here, if you or your friend you are talking to have it or we look for who will import it or how they want to invoice.”
Although Simon is not the freight forwarder referred to above, this Encrochat indicates the scope of collaborators Morris O’Shea Salazar acquired as he flooded Ireland with coke.
