Australian cricketer David Warner has been reunited with his baggy green and the batter on his social media post on Friday said he was ‘relieved’. The southpaw is playing his final international Test against Pakistan in Sydney and complained four days ago while the team was traveling from Melbourne that he lost his cap which was given to him on his debut way back in 2011.
“Hi everyone, I am very pleased and relieved to let you all know that my baggy greens have been found, which is great news. Thanks to all involved and I am extremely grateful. Qantas, the freight company, our hotels, and team management. Thank you,” Warner wrote on Instagram.
Baggy green is considered a price possession and holds a high place in the Australian cricketing culture.
“The bag in which they were packed was found at the team hotel, with all the contents inside. The movements of the missing bag are unknown despite extensive searches and the review of CCTV footage at multiple locations and the efforts of numerous parties since Tuesday,” a Cricket Australia spokesperson said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
Cricket Australia’s Chief Executive Officer, Nick Hockley was relieved that the issue was sorted and said, “It’s a huge relief David’s cap has been located and a big thank you to everyone who was involved in the search. We appreciate it.”
Earlier Pakistan Test captain Shan Masood also spoke about the importance of Warner’s Baggy Green and has called for a country-wide search.
Warner has had an illustrious career for the Aussies and is celebrated as one of the greatest Test match openers the game has ever seen. In 112 Test matches, the gutsy left-hander made 26 tons and 36 half-centuries. He also has a mammoth 335 against Pakistan.
In addition to red-ball format Warner also has declared retirement from the ODI format. He featured across 161 games and scored around 7000 runs, Warner was part of Australia’s World Cup winning squad in 2015 as well as recently in 2023, where he finished as Australia’s leading run-getter.
