Mad Men’s Jon Hamm as a North Dakota preacher and sheriff who believes he’s above the law, Juno Temple as a seemingly normal midwestern housewife with a dark past, Jennifer Jason Leigh as her mother-in-law and the “Queen of Debt”, and Dave Foley as an eyepatch-wearing lawyer are among the characters that will populate the fifth year of the Calgary-shot anthology series Fargo.

The new series wrapped production in the spring after shooting in Calgary and the surrounding area. The series, created by Noah Hawley, has been nominated for 55 Emmy Awards since premiering in 2014. The first three seasons were shot in Alberta while Season 4 was filmed in Chicago. The darkly comic anthology crime series features new characters, storylines and settings every season.

Year 5 will take place in Minnesota and North Dakota in 2019. The plot involves Dorothy Dot Lyon (Temple) landing in hot water with authorities, which plunges her back into a life she thought she had left behind. Hamm’s Sheriff Roy Tillman has been in pursuit of Dot for a long time, and he has his “feckless” but adoring son Gator (played by Stranger Things alumni Joe Keery) and a “shadowy drifter of mysterious origin” (played by British actor Sam Spruell) along for the ride.

With her dark secrets revealed, Dot tries to shield her family from her past, including her doting hubby Wayne (David Rysdahl). Wayne’s disapproving mother Lorraine Lyon (Leigh) is CEO of the largest debt collection agency in the country but she decides to help her daughter-in-law, along with her in-house counsel, Danish Graves (Kids in the Hall alumni Dave Foley).

Hamm is best known for his Emmy-winning role in Mad Men. Temple was nominated for a 2021 Emmy for her role in Ted Lasso and Leigh earned an Oscar nod for her role in Quentin Tarantino’s 2015 western The Hateful Eight.

Inspired by the 1996 dark comedy film of the same name created by Joel and Ethan Coen, Fargo debuted in 2014 with a cast that included Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman. Season 2 starred Ted Danson, Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons. Season 3 starred Ewan McGregor, Carrie Cool, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and David Thewlis. Season 4, which took place in 1950s Kansas City and was shot in Chicago, starred Chris Rock.
