    Darren Alexander won a pair of medals with Team Canada at the International Bowling Federation championships in Kuwait.

    The 32-year-old Alexander was part of Canada’s gold-medal winning men’s team and claimed a silver medal in the all-events team competition.

    Individually, Alexander, who has been on the national team for five years, had the best average in his pool for men’s singles play, but finished a four-way tie in match-play points and lost a rolloff to advance to the semifinals.

    He came back to help the men’s team beat China 2-1 in semifinal play and then take gold by defeating Korea 2-1 in the final.

    Alexander was one of three Canadians to finish in the top 10 individually in the all-events competition to help Canada to a silver-medal finish in that category.

    WECSSAA tennis championships

    WECSSAA players will be eyeing a spot at OFSAA at Wednesday’s SWOSSAA tennis championships in Chatham.

    The Massey Mustangs took the open division title and the Riverside Stingers the high school division championship at WECSSAA.

    In the open division, Massey’s Amrit Gill won the boys’ singles title while Walkerville’s Stasia Kryk captured the girls’ singles division. Massey’s Jaewon Han and Muwon Han were uncontested in claiming the boys’ doubles title.

    In high school competition, Assumption’s Schucheng Xu claimed the boys’ singles division and Ste. Cecile’s Anjali Atikukke the girls’ singles title.

    Riverside’s Aleksandar Jozic and Nolan Bryans teamed to take the boys’ doubles championship and Ste. Cecile’s Valentina Ruede and Annika Lam the girls’ doubles title.

    Saints seeing stars

    The St. Clair Saints, who will look to defend the team’s Ontario Football Conference title on Saturday, had 10 players named to the league’s all-star team, which was voted on by league coaches.

    Offensively, quarterback Maurice Sodja was named after completing over 60 per cent of his passes this season. He was joined by receivers Javier Lewis, who averaged 26.8 yards a catch with seven touchdowns, and Darius France, who averaged 21.7 yards per catch with three touchdowns. Also named was running back M.J. Doyle-Marshall, who averaged 9.3 yards a carry and scored seven touchdowns, and offensive lineman Ezzat Elnagmi, who saw time at both tackle spots and centre.

    Defence saw five more Saints recognized for regular-season performances in defensive ends Carl Fabre, who had eight sacks, and Mo Ibrahim, who had four sacks, along with linebacker  Keewone Parker and defensive backs Nathaniel Norton, who had four interceptions and a forced fumble,  and Billy Patteson Jr., who had three interceptions.

    International curling gold

    Cathy Moncur and Dave Moncur were part of the winning team at the Margarita Curling Club Bonspiel, which was celebrating its 25th anniversary, in Bern, Switzerland.

    Teamed with Waterloo’s Megan Arnold and Jamie Arnold, the foursome emerged as the only unbeaten squad in the field of 72 teams.

    After wins over squads from Scotland, the United States and two from Switzerland, the Canadian foursome beat another team from Scotland by a 10-4 count to take the title.

    Canada picks Kaze-Gascon

    Virginie Kaze-Gascon was one of 19 athletes selected by Wrestling Canada Lutte to compete at the U23 World Championships, which are set for Oct. 23-29 in Albania.

    The 23-year-old Kaze-Gascon competes for the Montreal Wrestling Club. A L’Essor high school product, Kaze-Gascon, who will compete in the 55kg division, placed fifth at this competition a year ago in Spain.
