    Crown on the hook for $700m as casino fines mount

    CROWN’S MOUNTING FINES:

    * June 2023: $20m fine

    – For wrongly claiming tax deductions by including the costs of certain promotional activities as amounts paid out as winnings and seeking to deliberately conceal their nature

    – The practice was uncovered during Victoria’s 2021 royal commission into Crown’s Melbourne operations

    – Fine imposed by the Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission

    * May 2023: $450m fine

    – For failing to comply with anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing laws

    – Fine agreed to with the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre

    – The financial intelligence agency launched legal proceedings in March 2022 after its investigation identified poor governance and risk management failures at Crown.

    – The agreement is subject to Federal Court approval at a hearing in July

    * April 2023: $30m fine

    – For letting Melbourne gamblers deposit bank cheques made out to themselves in breach of problem gambling and money laundering controls

    * One patron told the 2021 royal commission a bank cheque made out to him for $100,000 was initially honoured

    – Fine imposed by the Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission

    * November 2022: $120m fine

    * $100m fine for allowing patrons to gamble for upwards of 24 hours without a break and failing to stop patrons

    – $20m fine for preventing gamblers from using devices to hold down pokie machine buttons, allowing patrons to play on multiple machines at the same time

    – Fines imposed by the Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission

    * May 2022: $80m fine

    – For its China Union Pay scheme which facilitated the illegal transfer of $164m in funds between 2012 and 2016

    – Between those years, Chinese nationals were prohibited from transferring more than $US 50,000 per year to another jurisdiction under local laws

    – Fine imposed by the Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission
