Cameron Smith will pocket a cool $4.5 million if can retain the British Open golf title he won last year.

The Open announced on Wednesday it is raising its overall purse to $24.7m, with the winner at Royal Liverpool next week pulling in almost 20 per cent of that figure.

Smith’s purse for last year’s St Andrews’ success was $3.7m, with 2022’s total prize fund sitting at $21m.

Prize money has increased this year at all the majors, with the US Open going up to $30m, the most among the four grand slam events.

    Winner Wyndham Clark received $5.4m.

The Masters increased its purse to $27m while the PGA Championship went up to $26.2m.

“Our aim is to ensure The Open remains at the pinnacle of world golf and we have almost doubled the prize fund since 2016,” Martin Slumbers, CEO of tournament organisers the Royal & Ancient Golf Club (R&A), said.

Slumbers noted the “substantial increases” in prize funds across golf, with the PGA Tour establishing $30m purses for its elevated events and $37m for The Players Championship.

LIV Golf offered $37m purses – $30m for individual competition – last year.

Slumbers said the R&A has also raised the prize money for the Women’s British Open, along with putting more resources into elite amateur competition and programs to increase participation in golf.

“We believe that getting this balance right is vital to the long-term future of the sport,” he said.
