Bam Adebayo has been confirmed as Joel Embiid’s replacement for the All-Star game. Embiid is recovering from a procedure on his meniscus. He may not return this season.
As such, Adebayo will earn the honor of being named an All-Star. It’s the third time in his career he’s achieved the feat. He will also be the Miami Heat’s first All-Star starter since Dwyane Wade in 2016, as Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald notes.
Adebayo has been impressive this season despite the Heat’s struggles. He continues to be an All-NBA-level defender. His playmaking around the elbows is a core part of Erik Spoelstra’s offensive system. Now, he’s being recognized for his importance to the Heat by replacing the reigning MVP as an All-Star starter.
Miami will be hoping Adebayo continues to produce at his current level once he returns from the All-Star break. This season, he’s averaging 20.2 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 4.2 assists, shooting 51% from the field. The Heat need him to continue being a two-way fulcrum for the franchise if they’re going to repeat their Cinderella run to the NBA Finals later this year.
Regardless of how the Heat’s season ends, Adebayo can be proud of his latest achievement. Being named as a starter for the All-Star game is high praise. It’s recognition for all the hard work and sacrifice that is made behind the scenes. Miami will undoubtedly be proud of their star big man.
Nevertheless, the culture within the Heat franchise means that the accomplishment won’t be celebrated beyond a simple congratulations. Spoelstra’s team is chasing a championship. They’re trying to turn their season around and develop an identity.
For now, though, Adebayo can enjoy representing Miami at the All-Star game. He can also enjoy being among the best players in the world. Because once the regular season gets back underway, he and the Heat face an uphill battle to replicate their success from last season.
