Australia has enjoyed another golden day in the pool, at the velodrome, in triathlon and rugby 7s at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago.

    Key points:

Inez Miller and Mikayla Bird added golds to their meets, with victories in the 400m freestyle and 100m butterflyLauren Bates and Keira Will won gold and silver in the velodrome during the 60-lap points raceTriathletes Aspen Anderson and Jack Latham also combined to win gold for Australia in the mixed relay

West Australia’s Inez Miller continued her winning ways in the pool, adding the 400m freestyle to the 200m freestyle and mixed 4x200m crowns she claimed earlier in the week.

She also boasts a silver and a bronze with one more day of swimming to come.

“I’m pumped, it was a solid swim. It was my first time under 4:16 in two years so that’s really, really good,” said Miller, who clocked 4 minutes, 14.97 seconds.

Mikayla Bird also claimed her fifth medal of the meet when she won the women’s 100m butterfly in 1:00.15.

Hannah Allen (4:18.72) and Lillie McPherson (1:00.80) won their maiden Trinbago 2023 medals by touching the wall for silver in the women’s 400m freestyle and 100m butterfly respectively.

Lauren Bates and Keira Will continued where they left off as the cycling program moved from the road to the velodrome.

Competing in the points race, the duo fought it out across 60 laps, with current Oceania champ Bates claiming gold with 27 points ahead of silver medallist Will on 19.

“It was a smaller field than I’m used to, making the race quite different,” Will said.

“There was some strong competition, though, and we definitely had to make sure we were paying attention because there were a couple of strong moves that we almost missed.”

In the men’s sprint qualifying round, South Australia’s Tayte Ryan clocked the fastest time of the day at 10.670 seconds, earning automatic qualification to the semifinals.

Triathletes Aspen Anderson and Jack Latham combined to win gold for Australia in the mixed relay.

With expected difficult conditions, the call was made to shorten the course, leaving each athlete to complete one leg of the race rather than the expected two.

“I’m really happy with that race as we’ve both worked really hard for it. We had good conditions and it worked for us,” Anderson said.

“I had a bit to catch up on and riding out by myself was a bit hard, but it was fun to chase and push through.”

The women’s rugby 7s team thrashed Canada 50-0 in the gold-medal match after outclassing Fiji 43-5 in the semis.

At the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Chelsy Wayne won silver in the women’s discus with a best throw of 49.39m.

Daniel Williams was fourth in 3:45.91 in a high-class men’s 1500m won by Kenyan Jospat Kipkirui.

Among the highlights on day five will be Delta Amidzovski in the women’s 100m hurdles.
