With about 120 free birds to distribute, BIA representatives ran out about 12 minutes after they started passing frozen birds into open arms.

Larry Horwitz, chair of the Wyandotte Town Centre BIA, said the BIA will likely hold a second giveaway later this year.

“The directors of the BIA and the merchants wanted an opportunity to give back to the community, to the people that support their businesses during the year,” Horwitz said. “What better time than Thanksgiving?
“There is a need. There is inflation, there’s a recession, there’s all kinds of things going on. The lineup is a block and a half long. It’s crazy.
“I’m hoping they can have a solid meal with their families for the holidays. This is very exciting and a great opportunity for us to feel good and support the community.”
Roughly 40 people who waited in line for a turkey outside Al Sabeel Restaurant left empty-handed. Hortwitz assured him the BIA would give away more turkeys around Christmas time.
The Wyandotte Town Centre BIA is Windsor’s largest BIA geographically, Horwitz said. It runs along Wyandotte Street East from the east side of McDougall Street to the west side of Gladstone Avenue and includes one block north and south of Wyandotte in that stretch.
