NEW DELHI: During the second Test match against Bangladesh in Kanpur, Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin revealed that the team considered forfeiting an inning. This discussion emerged due to disruptions by rain and a wet outfield, which washed out more than two days of play time.On Day 4, Bangladesh continued their inning at 107/3. With limited time left in the match, and India eager for a result, the team debated this strategy.Ashwin shared that they discussed this option because of the challenging weather and the intense heat impacting the players.”Yes, we discussed it (forfeiting an inning). We were considering whether we should forfeit an inning, but the heat was so intense. These are harsh conditions—sweating profusely, I had to change shirts four times in a day, and it still wasn’t enough,” Ashwin said on JioCinema He further added: “It was especially tough on the fast bowlers, and even the spinners found it exhausting. If we got them out for another 200 runs, it would still mean spending five sessions on the field, which would be hard on the batters as well. So, we decided to bat and go after the bowling.”Despite the challenging conditions, India bowled Bangladesh out for 233, and declared their first innings at 285/9 after scoring at a brisk run rate of 8.22, gaining a lead of 52 runs. Indian bowlers then restricted Bangladesh to 146, which allowed India to chase down the 95-run target and secure a 7-wicket victory.

Ashwin was awarded the Player of the Series, marking his 11th title in Test cricket. This achievement puts him on par with Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan, who also has 11 such titles. However, Ashwin clarified that comparisons with Muralitharan are not his focus.”I’m not comparing myself with him (Muralitharan). It’s a great milestone, and I’m pleased. At the end of the day, you’re playing a game you love, and it’s nice to take something away from it. These numbers come as a result of the joy I’m putting into the game. I love my game, and these are just by-products. While I’m glad and pleased, it’s not something that drives me anymore,” Ashwin added.
