Voice-controlled smart door lets you toggle between transparency and opacity

Why it matters: Balancing smart home connectivity with privacy can be challenging. Home Depot is addressing this issue with its latest offering, the Smart Glass Door for its Hubspace platform. This innovative door allows users to toggle between transparent and opaque modes with just the flip of a switch or a voice command.

The door’s standout feature is its electric smart glass window, which can seamlessly transition between clear and frosted modes. With the press of a button, you can allow natural light to flow through or instantly frost the glass for privacy. While curtains and blinds are traditional options, there’s something satisfyingly futuristic about a window that can simply switch opacities.

As a smart home product, the privacy control extends beyond just a physical button. The Hubspace app and voice assistants like Google Assistant and Alexa can remotely toggle the glass as well. You can even set up routines that automatically frost the window if your video doorbell detects an approaching visitor.

A removable battery that lasts around two months before needing a recharge via its USB-C port or the included charging dock powers the glass. The door is designed for standard entryways and comes pre-hung in a weather-sealed frame for easy installation.

While the door comes in a single size, you can choose from multiple dimensions for the glass window. Prices start at $799 for the basic quarter window model, with costs increasing to $899 and $998 for larger half and three-quarter lite versions, respectively. This pricing is reasonably affordable, considering it is comparable to that of regular fiberglass doors. Availability begins on September 30.

Of course, you’ll still need to factor in the purchase of a separate smart lock unless you plan to reuse an existing one. However, the door does include pre-cut holes and a Bluetooth bridge, making it easy to integrate whatever lock you choose with the Hubspace ecosystem.

The Smart Glass Door represents just one piece of Home Depot’s expanding Hubspace smart home lineup. Other recent additions include Defiant’s DIY security system, Vissani smart freezers, and even Hampton Bay’s permanent outdoor string lights.
