The Football Review Committee (FRC) are hopeful that a key phase in their ambitious plan to improve Gaelic football’s entertainment and enjoyment factor will be televised.
A trial run of their ‘enhancements’ for the sport will be staged in Croke Park on Friday, October 18 and Saturday 19, in the form of an inter-provincial competition, featuring players whose club involvements have concluded for the year.
The games – two semi-finals and two subsequent matches between the winners and losers – will be played under the proposed rules, which are in the advanced stages of being finalised by the FRC.
Both days will be open to the public. Given the degree of curiosity about the potential new rules, which will be trialled in the 2025 League and Championship pending approval at Special Congress in November, the games may draw a sizable crowd.
Speaking at a press briefing in Croke Park today, FRC chairman Jim Gavin said he was hopeful that the games would be also be televised live.
It is not clear yet which broadcaster would do so, although TG4 are known to be interested. Schedules could dictate that only the two Saturday matches – the final and the ‘shield’ final between the two semi-final losers – will be screened.
Gavin today briefed media in detail on the status of the FRC’s work to date, which has crystallised into seven ‘core enhancements’ to Gaelic football, including a change to the scoring system and the provision for three outfield players from each team to remain inside the ’65 metre line when the ball is in the other half of the pitch.
