Two men confronting a bear do not have to outrun it, just each other. It is an old joke, but it fits a new race: next year’s presidential campaign. The two men, of course, are Biden and Trump. Both have been elected president and both appear likely to be on the same ballot next year – an extreme rarity in American politics. The bear they face is their own political baggage; it is a bear that certainly would have devoured other candidates, and it assuredly will devour one of them.
