An Inglewood housefire drew a swift response from Calgary firefighters on Saturday evening.
The blaze occurred shortly before 6 p.m., when Calgary Fire Department crews were dispatched to the 2700 block of 16A Street S.E. Upon arrival, the firefighters encountered a four-plex multi-family dwelling, where heavy smoke and flames were issuing from the front windows.

“Arriving crews met the occupant of the involved home who was suffering from smoke inhalation after self-evacuating,” stated a City of Calgary press release.
Crews extinguished the flames from outside before moving into the building to bring the fire under control. Firefighters were able to ensure evacuation of the entire four-plex and confirm that there were no other occupants in the involved suite, according to the city’s release.
Calgary Fire Department crews and Emergency Medical Service personnel assessed the self-evacuated occupant for smoke inhalation but the resident was not taken to hospital.
Unfortunately, two of the occupant’s cats were found deceased in that involved unit, the release added.
Crews remained on scene into the night while investigators worked to determine the cause of the fire, which has not yet been released. Traffic in the area has reopened fully.
While the fire was contained to the room of origin, smoke damaged the lower attached unit.
“The Calgary Fire Department would like to remind citizens about the importance of working smoke alarms and having an evacuation plan for your home and all occupants,” the city’s release concluded.
