Kelly Schweida will resist the urge to geld promising three-year-old Deep Respect, as he put in a winning dress rehearsal for seven days time when he takes filly Miss Joelene to Sydney.
The veteran trainer combined with prominent owner Darren Wilson to win the QTIS 3YO Handicap (1350m) on Saturday, but they have their eyes firmly fixed on Sydney.
Miss Joelene races in the same colours as Deep Respect and will kick-off her Sydney campaign in the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes at Randwick next week.
While the filly comes out of a midweek runner-up performance in Brisbane, connections are confident she can make her presence felt down south.
The pair have another promising type on their hands in Deep Respect, who will be aimed at the Magic Millions after his romp on Saturday.
The $240,000 purchase has been a work in progress, and Schweida said he is far from a finished product.
“He is a nice horse, he is a real beast, a colt, and we want to keep him that way because he is by Deep Field and he is infertile now,” he said.
“I hope we can because he is a real sh–head, he will only do what we make him do.
“He is a gorgeous looking horse, so we are keen to go on with him, he will have a break now and get him ready for some of those better races.
“He is a Magic Millions horse, so that is the goal really.”
Meanwhile, the combination of Natalie McCall, Damien Thornton and owner Jeff Allis smelt blood in the water again with Tiger Shark, making it back-to-back wins at Doomben.
The $15,000 weanling is proving to be a cash cow for her ownership group, picking up another $48,000, on the back of her $72,5000 winners cheque a fortnight ago.
Stradbroke Handicap winning trainer McCall had toyed with the idea of campaigning the filly down south in the spring, but will instead aim up for a summer carnival at home.
Along with Allis in the ownership is his wife Janine, who was a regular on popular show Shark Tank.
The couple now call Noosa home after making the move up from Victoria.
Stuart Kendrick was able to strike in the Listed Doomben Mile with recent stable pick-up Tidal Creek, who was booted home by apprentice Bailey Wheeler.
Kendrick joked he only purchased the horse online after it beat another of his in another race, with the trainer recouping $72,500 of his $85,000 purchase price in one hit on Saturday.
