“It’s a community now. If you can’t live in a community in here, you can’t live in a community out there.” An official trailer has debuted for a documentary film titled 26.2 to Life, made by filmmaker Christine Yoo. This premiered at the DOC NYC Film Festival last year, where I had a chance to see it. It’s a fascinating film taking us inside the walls of the infamous San Quentin Prison in California, and allowing us to meet and spend time with some inmates there. It also won Audience Choice Award at the 2023 Santa Barbara Film Festival and Best Documentary at the Seattle Film Festival. Behind the walls of San Quentin State Prison, three men sentenced to life in prison for murder undertake running a marathon on a quest for redemption and freedom – or something like it. The doc features Markelle “The Gazelle” Taylor, Tommy Lee Wickerd, Rahsaan “New York” Thomas, and Coach Frank Ruona. This is one of those eye-opening docs you’ll never forget, if only because we get to hear from people that most of us would never encounter in our regular lives.
Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Christine Yoo’s doc 26.2 to Life, direct from YouTube:
The San Quentin Prison Marathon has an unconventional marathon route: 105 dizzying laps around a crowded prison yard. 26.2 to Life is a new documentary directed by Christine Yoo that tells the story of incarcerated men who are members of the 1000 Mile Club, the prison’s long distance running club. They train all year for this 26.2 mile race. For the men who take their places at the starting line on a cool, sunny November morning, completing the marathon means more than entrée into an elite group of athletes. It’s a chance to be defined by more than their crimes. Cheering them on are a small staff of volunteer coaches, veteran marathoners who train with the runners throughout the year. The bonds they forge on the track create a community that transcends prison politics and extends beyond the prison walls as members are released. 26.2 to Life is a story of transformation and second chances. It offers a rare glimpse into a world out of bounds, as the men navigating life sentences seek redemption – and freedom… or something like it.
26.2 to Life is directed by producer / writer / filmmaker Christine Yoo, also director of the film Wedding Palace previously, plus a few other short films. Produced by Christine Yoo, Carolyn Mao, Sara Sluke, and Hella Winston. This initially premiered at the 2022 DOC NYC Film Festival last year, and screened at this year’s Santa Barbara, Seattle, Cleveland Film Festivals and IFFBoston. Presented by HOKA. Yoo’s doc 26.2 to Life will debut in select US theaters on September 22nd, 2023 this fall, with national virtual premieres from September 29th to October 1st.
