A sinkhole temporarily closed eastbound traffic on the Trans-Canada Highway in Banff National Park Thursday afternoon and evening, grinding traffic to a halt in the area.
Alberta 511 said on social media at 7:46 p.m. it has reopened traffic along the highway, turning the westbound lane into single-lane, two-way traffic. The eastbound lane remains closed.

Parks Canada said in a Thursday afternoon Facebook post that eastbound lanes between Norquay Road and Compound Road had been closed, forcing traffic to be diverted through the town of Banff. The westbound passing lane on Highway 1 had also been closed, Alberta 511 says.
Alberta 551 first notified the public of the sinkhole at 3:23 p.m. Thursday afternoon.
“Do not exit town on Norquay Road. Engineers are on site to determine temporary solutions and long-term repairs,” the Town of Banff wrote on X, the social-media platform formerly known as Twitter.
The sinkhole has been assessed at seven metres long and two metres wide, the town wrote.
