A 14-year-old girl has died after eating shawarma from a restaurant at Paramathi in Tamil Nadu’s Namakkal district. Health Minister Ma Subramanian said Tuesday that 42 people who ate from the restaurant were receiving treatment and that government officials would inspect restaurants across the state.
Kalaiyarasi, a resident of A S Pettai, ate the shawarma on the night of September 16 and experienced severe discomfort the next day. She was taken to a private hospital but received no treatment as there were not enough staff, it being a Sunday. She was reportedly found dead on Monday morning at her home.
The minister said in a statement that 200 people ate at the restaurant on the same day and that the authorities immediately identified the affected and admitted them to hospitals. Three samples of food have been taken from the restaurant and sent to a laboratory in Salem for testing, he said. The restaurant has been sealed and its licence cancelled. Officials destroyed 42 kg of meat seized from there.
In the wake of the incident, the sale of shawarma/grill chicken has been banned across the district. A 13-member team of health inspectors and other officials from the food safety department has been deployed to monitor and inspect all restaurants in the district.
The minister said the girl’s death was saddening. “The food safety authorities are directed to conduct a quality check at restaurants across the state from time to time and submit a report. An explanation has been sought over the incident from the Namakkal food safety officer,” he said.
