Some of the colleges introduce their students to subjects several terms before any NSW curriculum.
Achieving state rankings for an HSC subject in one of these colleges can also warrant prizes.
The fees inside the colleges range widely, but some have been found to charge around $1,700 for one term of a tutored subject.
Experts believe the colleges provide an unfair advantage to wealthy students who are heading into the HSC.
