A massive search operation is underway for a swimmer who has gone missing after being caught in a rip at a popular Sydney beach.
Emergency crews were called after reports a man was last seen swimming in the water at Bronte Beach about 7.45pm on Sunday.
A NSW Police spokeswoman said the man had failed to resurface, sparking the widespread search with the support of Surf Lifesavers, a NSW Ambulance helicopter and NSW Police Marine Area Command.
Surf Life Saving NSW city branch duty officer John Restuccia said crews searched the rocks as far south as Bronte Bogey Hole, near the baths, before suspending the search overnight. It will resume again at 6.30am, he added.
According to Mr Restuccia, two swimmers had got caught in the rip, but only one was so far able to be located and rescued.
