E.L.K. Energy is introducing its smart switches to Essex and Harrow to enhance electrical reliability, the company says.
“The E.L.K. board has approved the procurement of smart switches, which will bring the power of automation to the electrical system,” said Sherry Bondy, E.L.K. board chair, in a release. “These switches can provide automatic restoration and load transfer capabilities, improving system reliability and safety.”

Essex and Harrow were selected as the initial deployment sites for smart switches because they have dual feed supply, in which smart switches “will be able to automatically transfer load between the two available supply points in the event one fails,” said Jim Hogan, president and CEO of Entegrus, which is providing management services.
“Establishing capital investments that include automatic restoration and load transfer capabilities in all the communities we serve is a significant step in our journey towards a smarter, modern and more reliable electrical infrastructure,” said Bondy.
The first of the switches is expected to be installed in the spring of 2024.
E.L.K. Energy is a distribution company that services Belle River, Comber, Cottam, Essex, Harrow and Kingsville. It is wholly owned by the Town of Essex.
