Scathing cricket feud takes shock twist as Warner makes moves

The feud between Mitchell Johnson and David Warner has taken yet another twist, with the latter reportedly contacting former players to understand why the fast bowler unleashed on him.

Johnson threw the first punch in an explosive newspaper column in which he claimed Warner did not deserve a “hero’s farewell” and also took a swipe at chairman of selectors George Bailey.

Although the Aussie bowling legend doubled down on his criticism of Warner and Bailey on a podcast, he did regret the personal tone of the newspaper column.

Bailey did respond to Johnson’s verbal barb saying “I hope he’s OK” but Warner is yet to make a public statement.

However, the Sydney Morning Herald reports Warner has privately been asking for the reason why Johnson targeted him in the column.

The report claims Warner “has contacted current and former Australian players” to try and get a read on Johnson as the Aussie opener remains “in the dark”.

One source close to the team told the publication: “It’s the fourth or fifth time Mitch has unloaded on what has been a pretty successful Australian side.”

The source added that players were particularly baffled by the timing of the swipe given Australia has just won the World Test Championship, World Cup, and retained the Ashes.

Warner is expected to respond to Johnson’s criticism for the first time publicly on Friday during the Kayo season launch in Sydney.

One former player who did publicly comment is Steve Waugh, who told the Sydney Morning Herald Johnson and Waugh “are both adults who are entitled to their opinions and should be able to handle criticism”.

Several others have weighed in on the matter, including former Australian wicketkeeper Brad Haddin as well as boxing legend Anthony Mundine.

“He attacked David and George on levels you don’t want to see anywhere, to be honest,” Haddin said on the Willow Talk podcast.

“It left a bit of a bad taste in a few people’s mouths, I think.”

Mundine even went as far as describing Johnson’s scathing attack as “un-Australian”.

“It’s a low act (from Johnson),” Mundine told AAP.

“Things should be positive. Former teammates, teammates, should stick together.

    “It’s un-Australian.”
