Matildas captain Sam Kerr will not make a miraculous return in time for the Olympics, according to her father.
Kerr ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament during a training camp with Women’s Super League club Chelsea in January.
In a bittersweet week for the star striker, Kerr took home her third WA Sports Star of the Year prize just a day after the Matildas booked their place in the Paris Olympics.
But Sam’s father Roger confirmed there would be no unlikely call-up for the July Olympics as the 30-year-old continues her rehabilitation.
“(She’s) definitely out of the Olympics, so she’ll miss that and be ready for the start of Chelsea’s new season,” Kerr said on ABC Radio.
“It was disappointing news for her and everyone around and for the Australian side, but it’s sport. She’s in rehab now in Chelsea, and it’s a lonely life, rehab.
“She’s mentally well and she’s disappointed that she’ll miss the Olympics but hopefully she will be back within 12 months.”
In the early stages of her rehab, Kerr will look to stay involved with the team, taking on an off-field leadership role.
Roger said he had confidence the Matildas would perform strongly despite the absence of one of the world’s best players.
“Sam’s part of the team but it’s the whole team and it’s a very successful team, and hopefully they bring home a medal,” he said.
With a friendly against Mexico confirmed in Texas in April and an international window in June, it is expected the team will receive at least one send-off match in Australia to capitalise on the commercial success of the Matildas’ popularity.
