Fifteen months since it was shut down, Mumbai’s Gopal Krishna Gokhale Bridge will be opened for vehicular movement from Monday evening. Confirming the development, P Velrasu, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects), BMC, said the bridge will be thrown open to motorists from Monday 6 pm onwards.
A crucial east-west connector in the western suburbs, the Gokhale Bridge was shut down in November 2022 for carrying out structural repairs. The entire structure of the old bridge was pulled down and in its place, a new steel fabricated bridge was constructed.
This new bridge will have two arms with two lanes for vehicular movement on each side. However, initially, only one of the arms will be opened for vehicular movement as the girder for the second arm is yet to be launched.
However, officials of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation have said this single arm will cater to vehicular movement from both sides as two lanes on this girder will be operational.
“Even though one girder is being made operational first, it will allow traffic movement from both directions. The assembling work of the second girder is already underway and we are expecting to launch it within the middle of the monsoon,” Velrasu told The Indian Express on Sunday.

The first girder of this bridge was launched in the first week of December last year, following which the surfacing of the roads was taken up.
The length of the girder is 90 m making it the second longest railway over bridge (ROB) after the Vidyavihar ROB in the eastern suburbs, which measures 99.8m. The weight of the OWG is around 1,300 metric tonne (MT).
The old structure of the Gokhale Bridge, which was pulled down last year, measured 77 m, while the recently launched Delisle Bridge is 72 m.
