In the rape of a seven-year-old girl, a Surat District Court on Tuesday sentenced the convict to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment. The court also announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh for the girl under the Victim Compensation Scheme.
Jammu alias Jamil Pathan (31), was convicted of kidnapping and raping the girl on February 15, 2021.
The girl’s mother had filed the complaint the next day. In her complaint, she alleged her daughter who was sleeping on the roadside, was kidnapped by the man around 3 am.
The accused took her to a nearby deserted street, where he raped her and threatened to kill her, and later left the spot.
Police had registered a case of kidnapping, and rape under IPC sections 376 (A) (B), 376(3), 363, and 506(2). also under different sections of the POCSO Act.
Public Prosecutor Dipesh Dave told The Indian Express, “In our arguments, we pressed before the court that the victim’s family is poor The safety of women sleeping on the roadside is also important. We sought strict punishment to set an example.”
