An inquest into his death is mandatory under the Coroners Act. Urbantke said the inquest jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing further deaths.
The coroner’s officer gave no other details about the case. Essex County OPP did not immediately respond to requests for more information.
However, on June 14, 2019, Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit began a probe into the shooting of a 48-year-old man at his Tecumseh home by an OPP Officer.
Police had responded to a call about a “man in distress” at a home in the 600 block of Estate park.
The SIU said there was an altercation between the man and the police inside the house, which resulted in one of the officers being stabbed.
One of the officers discharged his weapon, striking the civilian. The man was transported to hospital, where he was pronounced dead the same night.
The SIU investigation finished in 2020 with a determination that the shooting was necessary as a final option and not excessive.
