Intense winter storm expected to worsen Tuesday, followed by a cold snap at the end of the week

A strong Pacific low pressure system sweeping across British Columbia is bringing heavy snow, leading to traffic accidents, power outages and the closure of Kamloops Airport.
B.C. Ferries has also cancelled its 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. departures from Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay on Tuesday and may cancel more sailings due to forecast heavy seas.

As of 11 p.m. Monday night, emergency services were dealing with an accident in the Ferrabee on Highway 1 south of Boston Bar near Hells Gate. The eastbound lane is closed.

There were also thousands of households without power across the region, particularly in the Northern parts of Vancouver Island.
The Kamloops Airport was closed due to heavy snow.
In Metro Vancouver, there was 7 cm of snow reported in Surrey, setting up a difficult commute on Tuesday.

Drivers are being warned to expect “blizzard-like conditions” on the Coquihalla Highway for the next couple of days.
Environment Canada says as much as 50 centimetres of snow could fall Monday night, with more on Tuesday, along Highway 5 between Hope and Merritt.
The weather agency has also warned that heavy waves, high winds and a high tide could cause coastal flooding on Tuesday morning.
It was these three conditions that led to heavy damages to Vancouver’s seawall, Kitsilano Pool and Jericho Pier in January 2020.
