A world-first diabetes breakthrough by Melbourne researchers could prove to be a potential cure for the disease.
A team at the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute has discovered how to restore insulin production in the pancreas.
The discovery was made using two drugs which are approved in the US to treat rare types of cancer.
Results from the study were published overnight in the scientific journal Nature.
The researchers from the Baker team are hopeful this finding could eventually lead to a cure.
