Freeman Real Estate Ltd. and partner Spirit of Math Central Toronto hosted their eighth annual Great Turkey Give on Sunday — once again with a bit of a twist.

Scores of people lined up to get a bag of goodies with “sustainable” Christmas fixings.

“We are happy once again to be able to provide this service to the community. Once again this year, we are not handing out turkeys. Instead our Great UnTurkey Give enhances our commitment to fight global climate change,” said Daniel Freeman, a senior vice-president with Freeman Real Estate.
“As part of this initiative, we will be handing out hundreds of shopping bags and boxes full of fresh, wholesome and sustainable foods from the earth, most of which are sourced locally from our partners.”

In all, 140 bags and 40 boxes of food were given out.
The event is inspired by the Honest Ed’s Christmas turkey giveaway.
Ryan Duffy was one of the people who lined up at 2 a.m. to make sure he got a package.
“I’ve been coming here for years,” he said.
Amanda also arrived early.
“Food is so expensive these days and this helps my family out,” she said.
