Carson Beck officially got the nod as Georgia’s starting quarterback on Saturday when Kirby Smart made the decision public.
In declaring Beck the starter, Smart said the four-year quarterback is “ahead of the other guys in terms of understanding the offense.”
That’s a significant development after Smart said earlier this offseason the Bulldogs might have to simplify the offense early in the 2023 campaign as their young quarterbacks caught up to speed.
Beck might be ready to handle on a larger chunk of the playbook than Smart initially believed. He’s taking over for Stetson Bennett, who led the Bulldogs to national championship victories in 2021 and 2022. It’s unprecedented in modern college football for a program to win three consecutive championships. Minnesota was the last program to do so, achieving the feat from 1934-36.
With Georgia ranking No. 1 in the preseason Associated Press poll, the expectation is for Beck to keep the Bulldogs on top of the college football hierarchy.
Luckily for the unproven quarterback, Georgia’s defense should take a lot of pressure off of him. Six Bulldogs defenders were named preseason All-SEC First-Team members.
Beck also has one of the best offensive skill position players in the country to throw to, tight end Brock Bowers, as well as veteran wide receiver Ladd McConkey.
Beck was a four-star prospect in the 2020 recruiting class, per 247 Sports. He’s appeared in 11 games over the past two seasons, going 36-of-58 (62.1 percent) for 486 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions in that space. He’s added 58 yards on 12 rush attempts.
Georgia opens its season on Sept. 2 against UT Martin.
