Five quick hits — protesters disrupt play and England gets a taste of Travball

Australia has taken control of the second Ashes Test at Lord’s, despite being put into bat on a green pitch.

Steve Smith’s unbeaten 85 helped Australia reach 5-339 at the close, although two late wickets gave England a slight boost heading into day two.

The drama though came at the start of the day, when Jonny Bairstow had to pick up a protester and carry him off the pitch.

Here are five big moments from the opening day of the Lord’s Test.

    1. Protesters just stop play

Jonny Bairstow might have had a couple of drops in the first Test, but he never looked like dropping a pitch invader on day one of the second Test at Lord’s.

Three protesters from Just Stop Oil continued their campaign of disrupting major UK sporting events this summer by attempting to storm the Lord’s pitch with their bags of orange powder.

One never made it onto the ground, but two others got far closer, arrowing towards the square.

Ben Stokes and David Warner ushered one away before a security guard tackled him.

But England keeper Bairstow took matters into his own hands at the other end, grabbing the protester and carrying him 60 metres to the boundary.

There had been concerns that protesters would target the World Test Championship final at The Oval, after protesters delayed England’s team bus prior to the Test against Ireland and stormed the field in the rugby union Premiership final.

If the pitch had been damaged there would have been a risk that the Test would have been abandoned.

    2. Ollie Nope

After choosing to bowl first under clouds on a greenish Lord’s deck, Ben Stokes would have hoped for some early wickets, with David Warner a particular target.

But after a plenty of plays and misses in the opening hour, both Aussie batters were still hanging around.

Stuart Broad was steaming in and testing both batters, but when the edge did come, the change went begging.

It was David Warner getting a thick edge to fourth slip, where Ollie Pope, moving to his right, put the ball down.

“It goes quickly, but you’ve got to take them,” former England skipper Michael Vaughan said on ABC Radio.

“It’s not easy for the slips because they are going to have to gamble and go quite close.”

Warner made another 46 runs before being bowled by a beauty by Josh Tongue for 66 — a costly drop.

Meanwhile, Pope’s day got no better. He left the field with a shoulder injury that kept him off the field all day.

    3. Usman Khawaja shoulders arms

While Warner was playing positively at one end, Usman Khawaja had continued where he left off in the first Test.

The Queensland opener had ground out 17 runs from 70 balls and appeared destined to make it through to the second session as Josh Tongue fired up for the final over of the morning.

Oddly though, the watchful and patient Khawaja completely shouldered arms to an in-swinger from the second-gamer and the ball clipped the top of off stump.

It wasn’t quite a Glenn Maxwell at the Gabba leave, but it had the same end result, the clattering of stumps and a long walk to the dressing room.

Josh Tongue was hooping it around corners and destroyed the castles of both Australian openers when Steve Smith arrived out in the middle at Lord’s early in the second session of day two.

His first ball was a beautifully timed on drive, and it was a sign of things to come.

He was 24 off 15 when he was given out caught behind off his 16th ball, but had it overturned with an immediate review.

Smith and Marnus Labuschagne, who was also given out but nailed his review for LBW, put on 77 off their first 73 balls together, thanks in no small part to some uninspiring bowling from Ollie Robinson, Ben Stokes and Stuart Broad.

If any seeds of doubt had been germinating in English minds that bowling first was a bad idea, the afternoon session was a healthy dose of sunlight, fertiliser and water to help those fears bloom at 2-190 at tea.

    5. Travball

After a phenomenal start to the match with the bat — the third wicket falling for 198 runs — Australia had the chance to really press home their advantage.

    Enter Travis Head.

The South Australian batter flew past fifty in just 48 balls — making it the third fastest at Lord’s by an Australian in Test match cricket.

The 100 partnership with Steve Smith came in just 104 balls — with Head scoring 67 of them.

“Head’s an exciting batter,” former England spinner Phil Tufnell told BBC Sport.

“He seems just to play the same way, it doesn’t matter what conditions or what the game situation is, he just plays it the same.”

However, as much as Travball giveth, Travball can also taketh away and Head was out stumped for a 73-ball 77 off the bowling of Joe Root.
