Perth Wildcats import Kristian Doolittle has expressed relief that his former teammates haven’t been hurt in the bloody conflict in Israel after playing in the country less than 18 months ago.
Doolittle is preparing to play Melbourne United on Friday night while his friends at Hapoel Eilat are watching their country fighting back against an attack from Hamas.
Sporting events in Israel were suspended after the opening game of the Israeli Basketball League. Several former NBL imports are playing in that competition.
Doolittle’s club wasn’t based near the conflict but he quickly made contact with his friends to ensure they were safe.
“It was definitely frightful,” the American said.
“I still have relationships from Israel with players that I played with. I’m just hoping they’re safe along with everyone, not only that I know personally but everybody that’s been involved there.
“I reached out to a couple of my former teammates and made sure they’re okay. They said they are fine.”
Doolittle has also played in Puerto Rico, Japan and France. He said it was often challenging to assess contract offers from around the world given players also have to consider any political conflicts that are taking place.
“The only place I had known was in war was Russia,” he said.
“It’s definitely something you’ve got to look up. That’s something my parents would do. I’m not too big on current events. They watch the news. I share everything I do with my father and my mum. They would be the ones to tell me.”
