A native of Columbia, Urshela was originally signed as an international free agent by Cleveland in 2008.

The six-foot, 215-pound spent the 2023 season with the Los Angeles Angles and batted .299 in 62 games. He made his Major League Baseball debut in 2015 with Cleveland and has also spent time with the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees and Minnesota Twins.

In 2022, Urshela hit .285 with 13 home runs and 64 runs driven in in 144 games. For his career, he carries a .277 average in 664 games with 64 homes runs and 280 runs driven in.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Urshela, the Tigers designated outfielder T.J. Hopkins for assignment just two days after claiming him off waivers from the San Francisco Giants.

If he is not claimed off waivers, the Tigers could outright Hopkins to the team’s Class AAA farm team in Toledo and invite him back to spring training.

    Lions keep Badgley

The Detroit Lions re-signed kicker Michael Badgley to a one-year contract.

The 28-year-old Badgley originally joined the Lions in 2022, but was beaten out Riley Patterson for the kicking job in 2023.

Badgley eventually rejoined the team and was signed to the practice roster, but moved into the kicking role when Paterson was let go in December.

He made all four field-goal attempts during the final four games of the regular season and hit three field goals in the playoffs, which included a 54-yard field goal that tied a franchise record for longest in a playoff game. Badgley was 13-for-15 on convert attempts.

A six-year veteran, Badgley began his career with the Los Angeles Chargers and has also spent time with the Indianapolis Colts, Tennessee Titans and Chicago Bears.

    NBA suspends Stewart

The NBA suspended Detroit Pistons centre Isaiah Stewart for three games for punching PhoenixSuns centre Drew Eurbanks prior to the two teams playing on Feb. 14.

After the incident, the six-foot-eight, 250-pound Stewart was arrested by Phoenix police, issued a citation and released. A misdemeanour assault charge against Stewart was reportedly dismissed.

The Pistons played for the first time on Thursday against Indiana with Stewart having missed the previous eight games due to an ankle sprain.

In 35 games this season, the 22-year-old Stewart is averaging 11 points per game and 6.8 rebounds per game.
