Club America has appointed Andre Jardine as the new head coach ahead of the 2023 Liga MX Apertura.
He replaces Fernando Ortiz, who dramatically resigned after the team’s semifinal loss against Chivas de Guadalajara during the 2023 Clausura playoffs.
Club America embarked on a month-long search for a manager, reaching out to Diego Alonso, Javier Aguirre, Eduardo “Chacho” Coudet, and recent U.S. men’s national team rehire Gregg Berhalter before landing on Atletico San Luis boss Jardine.
The Brazilian now joins Club America with an extensive coaching background, leading Atletico San Luis for a year after stints with Gremio, Sao Paulo and Brazil’s under 23 side. He led the Selecao to the gold medal at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo with a team that included Bruno Guimaraes, Antony and Richarlison.
Jardine also surpassed expectations by leading the mid table Liga MX side, reaching the quarterfinals in two of the three seasons he managed. Despite a limited roster, the team stood up to Club America during the 2023 Clausura playoffs before narrowly falling 4-3 on aggregate.
He will now quickly shift focus to the 2023 Apertura, which kicks off on June 30 as America hosts FC Juarez at the Estadio Azteca. The coach will also lead the Eagles in the inaugural rendition of Leagues Cup, a tournament pitting Liga MX teams against MLS sides starting on July 30.
