An Amazon customer was horrified after discovering a delivery driver had left his parcel in the most “disgusting” of places.
The customer, who is from Manchester, England, and asked not to be named, told Newsweek he was left “retching” when he found that his Amazon package was put in his food and garden waste disposal garbage bin.
He said the bin contained “a combination of rotting sausages and a cocktail of seven years’ worth of meal scraps that had turned into slime.” He added: “I can only describe it as a biowaste pit.”
Amazon has issued the customer a full refund, along with a gesture of goodwill.
An Amazon spokesperson told Newsweek: “We have very high standards for the delivery service providers we work with and how they serve customers. We’re investigating and we’re in direct communication with the customer.”
The customer said the package contained a gift he had purchased for his partner. He said the smell from simply opening the bin made him retch, but matters were made worse because the container is around 4 feet tall, meaning he had to almost climb inside to retrieve the parcel.
“I had to stick half my body in to reach it,” he said. “It was traumatic and unnerving. I had to shower intensely after the ordeal.”
He added: “I was lucky the item was intact, but the parcel packaging was disgusting and soaked.”

Last year, Amazon Logistics was named the best U.K. parcel delivery company in a poll conducted by the financial advice website MoneySavingExpert.
However, this particular customer was left far from happy with the quality of the delivery service. He said he received “no calls” from the driver about where to leave the package, only a note on the app that said it had been “handed to a receptionist.” He later shared his experience on Reddit under the handle u/mancmush.
“I tried the app and there was no way to resolve the matter, so I called them. They were very friendly, but all they said was ‘we will look into the matter,'” he said.
Though Amazon was able to refund the customer and offer some form of compensation for the incident, the customer said it was a “disgusting, traumatic experience” that left him “quite angry,” particularly because he thinks there were plenty of alternative places where the package could have been left.

“There were three places they could have left [it] safely, and they decided that was the best option,” he said. “I have neighbors I trust. A side door that is fine for access and a back gate. The gate and the side door are next to the bin. So I can’t understand why they chose the bin.”
He said the incident had “dampened” his view of Amazon: “My trust in their delivery team is at an all-time low.”
