Defective brakes, inoperative turn signals, and tires with no tread were among the offences that police discovered among commercial vehicles during a safety enforcement blitz across the Windsor-Essex region on Tuesday.

LaSalle police hosted the joint-forces initiative, which also involved Windsor Police Service officers, Essex County OPP officers, and representatives of Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation.

Spot roadside inspections were conducted on a variety of trucks and trailers.

By the end of the day, several vehicles had been taken out of service, and 38 charges were laid against commercial drivers and the registered owners of the inspected vehicles.

Along with safety and maintenance violations, some drivers were cited for speeding. Others were taken out of service because they lacked the correct class of licence for the vehicles they were operating

LaSalle police remind all commercial drivers that trucks and trailers must be thoroughly examined on a regular basis to ensure they are safe to operate in the community.

Loads must be secured, vehicles cannot be overweight, and appropriate licences should be verified before travelling on the region’s roadways.

“Accidents can be avoided or reduced with proper care and attention,” LaSalle police advised.
