Tennis star Naomi Osaka has given birth to her first child in Los Angeles.
The four-time Grand Slam singles champion, 25, and her boyfriend, the US rapper Cordae, welcomed their baby girl in an LA hospital and were “doing well,” a source told People.
The newborn’s name has not been announced yet, but Osaka revealed her gender in an Instagram post in June, with a photo showing a sign that read, “a little princess is on the way.”
The new mum shared her thoughts on baby names with People earlier this year.
“We have been discussing names. I would say that we are going for something more unique than traditional,” she said.
In announcing her pregnancy in January, Osaka said she “[couldn’t] wait to get back on the court” but that there was a baby on the way.
“These few months away from the sport has really given me a new love and appreciation for the game I’ve dedicated my life to,” she wrote.
“I realise that life is so short and I don’t take any moments for granted, every day is a new blessing and adventure. I know that I have so much to look forward to in the future, one thing I’m looking forward to is for my kid to watch one of my matches and tell someone, ‘that’s my mum’.”
Osaka withdrew from the Australian Open in January, prior to her pregnancy announcement, after sitting out the 2021 French Open and taking a mental health break.
Her absence fuelled speculation that the former world No 1, who has had difficulty dealing with her stardom, might not return to the game.
