Harry Kane scored an 18th-minute penalty as England hit back following a stunner from Xavi Simons which gave the Netherlands the lead in the semi-finals of Uefa Euro 2024.

Captain Kane struck a precise penalty under Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen’s dive as the Three Lions restored parity 11 minutes after falling behind.

In a breathless start to the game, Denzel Dumfries also cleared a finish off the line from Phil Foden, who hit a post with a shot from outside the penalty area after Dumfries had struck the woodwork at the other end with a header.

The winners will play Spain, who beat France 2-1 in the first semi-final, at Berlin’s Olympiastadion on Sunday (20:00 BST).

    Kane penalty vs Netherlands

A Video Assistant Referee (VAR) check decided that Kane had been impeded by a late Dumfries challenge as England were awarded the spot kick which drew them level in Dortmund.

Simons had opened the scoring with a sensational finish, pinching possession from Declan Rice before rifling an emphatic finish beyond Jordan Pickford from outside the box.

Foden then broke free inside the penalty area on the right and sent the ball rolling towards the net, only for Dumfries to intervene in the nick of time.

Inter wideman Dumfries rose highest from a subsequent corner, arrowing a powerful header towards goal which crashed off the upright.

The 1988 champions, though, had to settle for only 40 per cent of first-half possession as England produced a far more free-flowing performance than they had on their run to the final four.

England appeared to swap to a back four at the break, fit-again Manchester United full-back Luke Shaw replacing Kieran Trippier.

Donyell Malen had replaced Steven Bergwijn in the Netherlands’ starting line-up but made way for targetman Wout Weghorst at the break.

England were bidding to reach a second successive final, having lost on penalties to Italy in the decider of Euro 2020.
