Canada Day is the perfect time to entertain outdoors and spend time in nature, appreciating all the beauty our country has to offer, so it’s worth sprucing up your outdoor areas, creating a cosy, inviting atmosphere where you can host friends and family, says Dayna Isom Johnson, trend expert for online marketplace Etsy. Accent cushions, outdoor lighting and even a fire pit for making s’mores can help you achieve this.
“If you’re not a fan of the traditional red and white colour scheme, I suggest a more sophisticated palette inspired by Canada’s natural beauty, such as deep reds, forest greens, and other earthy tones,” she says.
Consider foraging wildflowers, pinecones and other natural foliage for table decor, even using a sprig of greenery to tie onto napkins for a beautiful nature-inspired table setting, says Johnson.

Culinary-wise, it’s a great excuse to stock up on local and seasonal ingredients, whether that’s your favourite Canadian cheese or shaking up a festive cocktail infused with local maple syrup, says Johnson.
Back to our roots
There has been a return to more traditional design in Canada this summer, says Johnson. Darker woods are on the rise after some years of Scandi-inspired light woods being so popular.
She adds that traditional materials like marble are taking centre stage, from smaller accents to full-blown statement pieces.
