Skating enthusiasts showed up in big numbers at the Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex in Windsor Saturday to support a raffle and food drive organized by MP Brian Masse (NDP—Windsor West).

Attendees didn’t have to skate to participate in the raffle, but judging by the blades on the ice, many did. Prizes were donated by Unifor Local 444, and other organizations.

Families, including some veteran skaters laced up their skates, others took to the ice for the first time, said Masse.

The event has transitioned to the Capri Pizzeria arena in recent years from being held outside.

Windsor West Little League baseball helped out this year. League first vice-president Randy Marion said the league is teaming up with Masse and the University of Windsor to hold a baseball catch-and-pitch clinic on March 23 at the Toldo Lancer Centre for children aged four to 17.

The organization is taking donations of new or gently used youth baseball globes, which can be dropped off at Nantais Sports at 1485 Tecumseh Rd. W.

The first catch-and-pitch event last year drew some new Canadians and some Indigenous Canadians to try out baseball for the first time, said Marion.

“We want them to come out and have some fun playing baseball.”

Register for the event by email brian.masse@parl.gc.ca or phone at 519-255-1631.
