Filled with much hustle and bustle, the city of Johannesburg has come a long way. As such, it boasts a rich history and is filled with many sites that are reflective of its past.

If you would like to journey back in time, here are some of Johannesburg’s top historical attractions:

    Constitution Hill

Being a former prison complex, Constitution Hill tells the story of South Africa’s turbulent past, as well as the transition to democracy. The historical attraction is just as old as the city of Johannesburg itself. Moreover, it has previously incarcerated a number of well-known political prisoners including Joe Slovo, Mahatma Gandhi, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and Nelson Mandela. Today, it is home to the country’s Constitutional Court.

    Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum

Located in Orlando West, Soweto, the Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum serves as a tribute and memory of Hector Pieterson, together with the youth of 1976.

It tells the story of the fateful day which was 16 June 1976 when youngsters united in resistance to Apartheid and an unfair education system.

At the museum, you can journey back to the day through evidence in the form of verbal testimonials, as well as pictures and audio-visual displays of the day’s happenings.

The Apartheid Museum tells the story of South Africa’s darkest era, and will help you understand the brutality of Apartheid.

The museum affords the chance for you to learn more about how segregation happened based on race, separating people into different groups according to their features such as skin colour, language and even the texture of their hair.

You will also see many exhibits including photographs, text panels, film footage and painful stories which expose the atrocities committed during the Apartheid era. Although it is an informative reminder of the past, the museum also stands as a beacon of hope for all mankind.
